A good webmaster knows that the best website design in the world are the one that achieves maximum performance under all circumstances. BTW, I found a site about web design in Spanish: diseƱos paginas web. It is a huge mistake to assume the belief those visitors needs to be entertained with fancy flash works which usually requires long loading time, when the truth is exactly the opposite.
These are the rules of a good website design.
1) Wherever possible, avoid the inclusion of a splash page
These are fancy pages you will see when you click on to a link to visit a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like 'welcome' or 'click here to enter'. They are pages with no purpose, and serves to discourage uses from fully utilizing the actual purpose of the website due to their slow loading time. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the 'back' button!
2) Banner advertisements should be kept to a minimum
Although these can be at the foot of a web page, adverts like this are primarily placed right at the top of the page in what is called the 'header'. Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable space. The best way to utilize web space would be to use good contents and weave your affiliate links into them so that the users would not feel coerced into buying.
3) Simple navigation is important
Keep navigation simple so that the youngest user can use it. Avoid the use of flash menus or multi-tiered menus because generally they are not a good idea as far as easy navigation is concerned. If you make it difficult for them, they will leave your site. Have a sitemap added to the website design to help them find what they are looking for.
4) Don't let your visitors feel as if they are lost
When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. This way, they can easily navigate the exact section they want. When each link that has been visited is marked in some way form the ones that are fresh, visitors can easily know which is fresh and which is fresh and which is not. Don't confuse your visitors because confusion means they will leave!
5) It is good to avoid using audio
If you wish for your visitors to stay long enough to read the contents, do not loop your music file in a way that irritates. One can get irritated by continuous sounds being played over and over again. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it - volume or muting controls would work fine. If you wish for the visitors to return to your site, learn to apply all these website design rules and you can reap the benefits of long term traffic.
